Filmmaker Amir Muhammad remembers the work of a dear colleague, recently deceased, who was an inspiration to him and certainly a whole generation of Malaysians.
I FIRST heard the name Yasmin Ahmad through her debut Petronas commercial for Merdeka Day. It was called LITTLE INDIAN BOY (1996).
It opens in black and white. The adult voiceover narrates how excited the boy was on that “special occasion”. He is woken up, bathed and fussed over; then he and his father weave through traffic on the father’s bicycle. All the cars around them look distinctly old-fashioned; are they taking part in an antique car procession?
