Penang As A Food Paradise May Need To Stretch Its Offering From Street Food to Fine Dining

Back in 2017, this tiny island we call home was featured in an article titled “George Town, Penang: Asia’s Greatest Street Food City?" on CNN Travel. In that article, Penang-born Malaysian chef and restaurateur Norman Musa said, “I agree 101% that Penang is the food capital of Malaysia.” Ah, but that’s something no true blue Penang lang would not agree to.

If you fancied having a Western-style meal in the late 90s, the go-to would be restaurants housed within the premises of international hotel chains—anyone remember The Brasserie or Tiffins? The Ship was also very popular back then. More than two decades down the road, the landscape has significantly changed; new cafés and restaurants are now sprawled across the island. Honestly, we have more ice cream shops than our blood sugar levels can handle—but somehow, there’s always room for one more canelé!
