In 2015, the Urban Studies Programme at Penang Institute conducted a thorough study of Lebuh Chulia, focusing on how the public realm was affected by the walkability of the street and the various businesses lining it—this includes restaurants, hotels, and vehicle rental companies. All the signs on this street, including blockages (permanent or temporary) on walkways, from the intersection with Jalan Penang in the west to Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling in the east, were identified.
Almost a decade after the first survey was done, we revisited Lebuh Chulia. This time, it is to observe the significant changes that have taken place. By cataloging the current businesses on the street, we are able to assess their evolution and explore the underlying sociological and economic factors.
