Air Hitam Educational Forest, or AID as it is affectionately known amongst the birding community and photographers alike, is located in Seberang Perai Utara. It is a freshwater swamp spanning approximately 10ha named after the nearby river which is “deep” (dalam in the Malay language) and “dark” (hitam, meaning black). We discovered this amazing place after reading an article on Penang Monthly way back in 2017 and decided to check it out for ourselves. We have been regular visitors since then.
The area has two observation towers connected by a canopy walkway hanging bridge, which gives the keen birder an up-close look at wildlife up on the trees. The tranquil, green place with meandering riverside boardwalks appeals to all birders, whether they are just starting out or seasoned enthusiasts.
