Bukit Mertajam, once an agricultural settlement, is today a prosperous commercial centre. The town gained attention from the British in the nineteenth century – thanks to its lucrative spice and sugar trade – and its growth has continued unabated.Today, it is an exciting and attractive place peopled by colourful personalities.
