PBA increases surcharge in drive to promote water conservation
In an urgent drive to get Penangites to turn off their taps, the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has increased the water conservation surcharge (WCS) from RM0.24 to RM0.48 per 1,000 litres for domestic consumption above 35,000 litres per month effective September 1, 2013. The tariff hike comes after Penang’s per capita domestic consumption recorded an all-time high of 302 litres/capita/day (l/c/d) on June 30, 2013.
According to PBAPP general manager Jaseni Maidinsa, a higher WCS promotes water conservation immediately.
