This is an obituary to Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal – a man who was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was indeed best described as “artist”, and in the broadest sense of the word.
SO OBVIOUS, yet so odd.
Syed Ahmad Jamal: ARTIST – that was the title of his last major exhibition, held from October 2009 until January 2010.
Maybe it could not be called a Retrospective as the National Art Gallery (NAG) had already honoured him with one in 1975. “ARTIST”, on hindsight, is most apt, for very, very few could straddle art with all its manifestations and in its various disciplines as National Art Laureate Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal (DSAJ) had. The monster 2009–2010 exhibition even had the royal touch of the revered King himself, and was accompanied by a 616-page book to boot.
