Botanic Gardens now leptospirosis-free
The Penang state government has officially declared the Botanic Gardens to be free of the leptospirosis bacteria. Health authorities had earlier erected signboards warning visitors against swimming in certain recreational areas due to the presence of the bacteria. In spite of the announcement, State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh asked visitors to remain cautious and help maintain the Gardens’ cleanliness. Bukit Panchor in Nibong Tebal and Taman Rimba in Teluk Bahang are said to still be contaminated with the same bacteria.
