A road trip through Europe need not be expensive. All you need is a car, good camping gear and an adventurous spirit.

The few times I’d gone camping had led to mixed results. Once, while trying to spend some quality time with the kids, we went to Pantai Kerachut in Penang. The beach was amazing and I wondered why there weren’t more people there. However, that night it rained torrentially, and then it rained inside our tent too. Overnight, the cheap inflatable mattress developed a slow leak and left us lying on the hard ground by morning.

A couple of years ago, I spent two nights camping in the French Alps. It was a truly awesome experience hiking in the mountains, but “wild camping” like this means you have to carry everything on your back, thus limiting the number of nights you can stay out.
