Anything worth achieving tends to come only after a lot of hard work has been laid on it. The same thing goes for the Unesco Heritage status that was gained by George Town in 2008. Here, we remember an important event in 1986 that helped things along.
Part of George Town, together with part of Malacca town, is now a Unesco World Heritage Site (WHS). The inscription in July 2008 has excited many and has certainly stimulated serious efforts to make George Town live up to its status. But even as we take pains to preserve and enhance the lifestyle, culture and architecture that make George Town George Town, it is important to remember that Unesco’s decision did not come all of a sudden, and out of the blue.
It took the hard work of many people over more than 20 years for George Town to gain that privilege.
