In our fourth and final article in this series, we feature Hamdan Abdul Majeed, director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad for Research and Investment Strategy. He has gained wide respect in Penang as an effective agent of change who is able to convince stakeholders to work towards common goals. His passion for Penang is behind many of the visible changes in the state today.

Tell us something about your background.

My early years were in Penang. I left Penang Free School to pursue a degree in Economics from the University of London. As a young boy I had my sights set on Medicine as I felt that was the best way to help others. I guess fate intervened and I pursued a career in finance instead. I started my career at HSBC Securities in Kuala Lumpur; I then went into capital markets advisory, specialising in debt capital markets, structured finance and project finance. The third and present phase is with Khazanah Nasional Berhad. Khazanah is the government’s strategic investor in new industries and markets. This is my seventh year with Khazanah.
