From July 25 to August 11, Penangpac played host to the World Press Photo 2013 exhibition, showcasing stunning photographs taken by photographers from all over the world. Fifty-four winners were selected in this 56th edition of the contest, chosen from an overwhelming 103,481 submissions by 5,666 photographers of 124 nationalities.
The winners this year include two Malaysians, Dr Chen Wei Seng and Stefen Chow. Chen’s vibrant bull-racing entry won first prize in the contest’s Sports Action category, while Chow’s portrait of Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei won second prize in the Staged Portraits category. They are the first Malaysians to be selected since the WPP was founded in 1955.
