Hidden, out of sight, without a voice. Modern slavery is a real and terrible problem, and it’s happening right under our noses.
Lai (not her real name) paid for her own airfare to get from Ho Chi Minh to KL. After arriving, she was arranged to work in a massage parlour where her employer confiscated her passport and forced her to have sex with her clients. If she wanted to leave, she would have to return the RM1,500 her employer claimed he had paid for her work documentations. She could not do so as she was not paid her wages.
When the centre was raided by the Malaysian police, she was rescued, only to be put in a shelter where she was further threatened and forced into sexual acts.
