Space for Penang’s local artists

Ottokedai and Chai Diam Ma in George Town are not your regular souvenir or coffee establishments.

Fact is, Penang is no longer just about its colonial history and street food. Since its listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site seven years ago, its art scene has flourished on both local and international levels. A notable development is how George Town Festival has managed to propel the city onto the international fair circuit. Turns out, the local art scene has managed to catch the art world’s attention.

Until recently, there has been relatively little support or availability of spaces in Penang for independent local artists. But all that is changing. Penang Monthly speaks to two establishments that give local artists space in the world.
