Hearing the Painting Before Seeing it

Three poets and an artist explore the connection between visual arts and the written word through an unusual exhibition.

“Can art be read?”

That is the question that “Reading Art”, a month-long exhibition held in conjunction with George Town Festival, is trying to answer.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Ch’ng Kiah Kiean, a full-time artist based in Penang, and three local poets: Skypie Chew, Koay Su Lyn and the writer of this article. Ch’ng is the founder of Urban Sketchers Penang, and is best known for his graphite and watercolour sketches of buildings and streets.

Sixteen years ago, Ch’ng held his first solo art exhibition and since then he has held several local and international ones as well.
