Kulim High-Tech Park is thriving, but given that it is situated merely 45km from Penang International Airport, is it necessary to build another international airport close by to serve it?

Kulim is the third largest township in Kedah, with a population of 85,309 (town, 2015) or 308,700 (district, 2014), and an international airport (KXP) in Sidam Kiri1 to serve Kulim is on the table. In December 2014 former Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir proposed an “aerocity” plan2 at the proposed 600ha airport site, and his successor, Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah is also keen to pursue the airport project, claiming that the residents of north Perak, Perlis and Penang will benefit from it in terms of employment opportunities and economic expansion.

The construction cost for the two-runway airport is estimated at RM1.6bil3.
