A Motorcycle Love Story

Last December, we asked readers to share with us their motorcycle romance stories for a chance to be featured in Penang Monthly. We received many entries, but one in particular stood out. Noor Aqilah tells us how the motorcycle came to be an intrinsic part of her life’s milestones.

Since meeting, we've made it a point to ride across the Peninsula together.

I MET MY husband back in university in 2014. Like my dad, he is passionate about motorcycles and an avid rider. We became engaged in 2015 and have made it a point ever since to ride together every year across the Peninsula. In 2016 we biked through Cameron Highlands, and Genting Highlands the following year. We covered even more ground after the wedding, travelling to the Titiwangsa Range, and to Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah.

In 2019 we were overjoyed to learn that we were pregnant! We were also gearing up for our biggest adventure yet. This time around, we rode from KL to Kota Kinabalu; on the whole, the journey took us 11 days, 19 hours and 30 minutes.

The route was definitely more challenging compared to the terrain on the Peninsula; we weathered through sun and rain, pushing our motorcycles through muddy waters and navigating rocky roads and landslide-prone areas. There were times when we needed to take the ferry as well. The adventure was full of unexpected twists and turns, but we were determined to forge onwards.

Mid-way through our journey, the motorcycle broke down suddenly. But fortunately for us, the locals of the area were very welcoming. We were invited into their homes where we feasted on delicious seafood and even ended up spending the night! It was truly memorable.

Our plans may have fallen through but as the saying goes, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans”. And now, we’re three!
