On this Tamil New Year, look out for Pongal Celebrations taking place in the early hours at Hindu temples around Penang where you can see sweet rice being cooked in new mud pots over an outdoor fireplace. Pongal means “overflowing”, and signifies abundance and prosperity.

Celebrations

The ninth day of Chinese New Year, also known as “Ti Kong Seh” (“Jade Emperor God's birthday”) in Hokkien, is celebrated by the Hokkien clan to commemorate their forefathers' escape in ancient China. Expect the magnificent annual parade along Chew Jetty. Fireworks will be lit at the stroke of midnight.

Meet-and-Greet

On the occasion of the release of the award-winning film, The Garden of Evening Mists, Gerakbudaya Bookshop and Hikayat present Tan Twan Eng in conversation with Bettina Chua Abdullah, where the author will talk about his work, the processes of film adaptation and his future plans. There will also be a screening of the film trailer, readings, as well as book signing.
