Whiteaways – Where Art Hangs Out

Galleries and spaces for the arts are burgeoning in Penang. While The Whiteaways Arcade in the heart of George Town might be better known to house the offices of the state’s tourism bureau, Penang Global Tourism, the quaint colonial building, built in 1903, is a great location for art exhibitions; its architecture, high ceiling and old-world charm provide a picture-perfect frame.

For such an edifice, rental is a humble RM300-400 a day, depending on the size of the space required. According to Vincent Kong, there are future plans to house more art exhibitions, with the Taiwan Cultural Exhibit (October 14-November 5) as the next change.

Art exhibitions were in abundance there in July and August as part of the George Town Festival. Here are but a few of the breath-taking (and quirky) items that were on display.

Chan Kit Yeng is a Penang-born freelance travel photographer and tourist guide. Her photography work has appeared in several international magazines, websites and record covers, including Travel+Leisure Asia, Bootsnall and Southeast Asia Globe. An avid independent traveller, in 2012 she completed and photographed an overland trip from Singapore to Europe together with her partner, writer Marco Ferrarese. When she's not snapping pictures and playing with local kids in some off-the beaten path location, she can most likely be found hiking in Penang's remotest jungle thickets.
