A “wholistic” treat for the health-conscious tourist

The popularity of medical tourism in Penang brings with it demands for post-treatment services, i.e. wellness and spa. That’s a need that Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa is fulfilling. Launched in late August, its two holistic wellness escape programmes target the global market – be they medical tourists or otherwise.

And what’s unique about Rasa Sayang is that it is partnering with local hospital Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH). The first resort within the northern region of Malaysia with such a concept, it also has an in-house nutritionist, Dr Yen Ang, who will advise on the overall wellness of guests. “It is my belief that many modern day illnesses can be prevented, managed or even reversed by making appropriate interventions to one’s lifestyle choices,” says Yen. “Based on strong scientific evidence, I have created a number of innovative and successful lifestyle intervention programmes and services, one of them being our highly acclaimed weight-management programme that targets major chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension through weight loss.”

Besides recovering patients, the resort also targets working adults who need a break from the rat race, offering a “vacation and wellness journey” with their five-day four-night Purify detox wellness escape and three-day two-night Rejuvenate de-stress wellness escape – each specially curated to ensure that the needs of guests are fulfilled.

With an already established infrastructure, CHI The Spa, Rasa Sayang is well-equipped for the programmes. The Rejuvenate Package starts every

Monday or Thursday while the Purify Package starts every Monday. The Wholistic Wellness menu is specially designed – the three main meals of the day are vitamin-packed, with a close eye kept on the calories. Healthy gastronomic delights such as Avocado Soup with Crab Meat, Poached Norwegian Salmon and Gluten-free Chocolate Cake are guaranteed to enhance one’s health. Guests who opt for the Purify package will receive a hospital visit to PAH and be given a full wellness screening. “It consists of a full physical check up; blood and urine screening by a medical doctor; and a health risk appraisal and comprehensive one-on-one lifestyle consultation by me,” says Yen. “The consultation focuses on not just the biomedical findings, but also nutrition, fitness, stress, emotions and other lifestyle choices that impact one’s overall wellbeing.”

During their stay, guests will also receive spa treatments included in the package; there will be wraps, baths, meditation, yoga and detoxifying massages to get rid of toxins in the body.

Penang’s laid-back atmosphere provides the perfect setting for guests to relax and unwind. The fact that it’s well-connected via flights is an added bonus. From the moment guests arrive at the airport till they are on the plane going back home, all their needs will be looked after.

A treat for the body, mind and soul indeed.
